Short answer: DLE games are daily puzzle games in the style of Wordle. Everyone gets the same puzzle each day, a round takes a few minutes, and many of the games borrow Wordle's "-dle" ending, as in Quordle, Worldle, Nerdle, Costcodle and Poople.
Where the "-dle" name comes from
Wordle launched in 2021 and spread in early 2022 because of three simple choices: one puzzle a day, the same for everyone, and a spoiler-free result you could share as a grid of colored squares. Other developers kept those rules and swapped the subject, and the suffix came with them. Players now call the whole family "dle games", even ones without the ending, like Connections or Daily Orbs.
The main types of DLE games
- Word games. Guess a word with color feedback (Wordle, Quordle), sort words into groups (Connections), or climb a word ladder (Weaver, Poople).
- Geography games. Guess a country from its outline, flag or exports, with distance and direction hints (Worldle, Globle, Tradle).
- Trivia games. Match, rank or recall facts (Daily Orbs, Krillion, our own Arena Rank).
- Math and logic games. Equations and estimates instead of letters (Nerdle, Angle).
- Movie, music and game dailies. Each wrong guess reveals more: another frame, another instrument (Framed, Bandle).
